www.pinchofcurry.com  The Works of Sarah Curry

This painting depicts local artist, mother, and wife,
Shannon Morris.  Painted on an old door of her
house, it corporeally involves and symbolically
represents her new beginnings and metamorphosis
into a giver of life, who must also sustain herself
and her family.  I have incorporated some of
Shannon’s photographs, which appear as the
poppies she waters, representative of nurturing her
own creativity.

I chose a more modern and abstract adaptation of
the Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo to reflect the
dreams Shannon was having about transforming
into a tree and to reflect the deeply rooted, but
living, and ever-changing goddess, who with gentle
strength brings sustenance to her more
complicated world.  Here, I show the goddess tree
balancing her traditional roles with those of the
contemporary female.
VENUS ENVY: HONORING THE FEMALE

A Queen Grows on Kingston
50" x 30"
mixed media on wood door

Opening Reception- Friday, September 11- 6-8pm
Show runs from September 11- October 15, 2009
Valley Art Center Gallery
155 Bell Street
Chagrin Falls, OH 44022
The female form has been the focus of art throughout history. In fact, one of the
earliest known works of art, the Venus of Willendorf (Austria), dates back to 22,000
BCE. This small (under 5”) sculpture was thought to convey permanence, stability and
dignity. (1) Its shape, although primitive, is decidedly female.

The title of Venus, the Roman Goddess associated with love, beauty and fertility, was
often given to art that venerated the female form. In this exhibition, we will examine how
woman, even in her earthly form, continues to inspire artists today.

This exhibition will display works of art by both male and female artists that use the
female form in their work. Some pieces will examine the roles that women have filled,
while others will concentrate solely on the figure. From sculpture to painting to
beadwork, the viewer will experience the familiar, and yet individually unique, form of
the female in contemporary works of art.

Having a working knowledge of art history is important for viewers when analyzing and
reacting to present day trends. The Valley Art Center will offer a lecture series that
traces the history of the female form in art. We will examine the styles that are
evidenced in different periods of history by looking at the changes in the way women
were depicted. The series will conclude by making conclusions about the role that the
female form plays in today’s art as we evaluate this exhibition.

Initiated by the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) in 2003, ArtCares is a collaboration
between the CIA and the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. Born out of the
awareness of the devastating impact the AIDS epidemic has had on the world of art,
and out of a consequent awareness that artists can contribute to the fight against
HIV/AIDS, ArtCares celebrates contemporary art by providing opportunities to bid on
original works in a variety of media, while enjoying wine and savories at an elegant
reception. All proceeds from the event benefit the AIDS Taskforce of Greater
Cleveland.

Tickets for this event are $50 per person, and $100 per VIP.  Please contact
Rebecca Strong at the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland to order tickets. Call

POUR L'AMOUR (FOR THE LOVE...)
The paintings, photographs and prints exhibited in POUR L"AMOUR represent a collection of feminine views on image and
self worth. The subject matter is both personal and universal, and deals with principles such as beauty, domestic life,
children and the dichotomy of youth and age. The artists have drawn inspiration from their current surroundings and
struggles, bringing forth a series of work that pays homage to the commonalities that women share in this day and age.
