This ongoing series of work began with the piece, Big Fish.
The gentleman depicted in this painting was the grandfather
of a dear friend of mine. A few weeks before he passed, I
had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman. We got to know
each other as we looked through an old photo album. Big
Fish was painted from a photo we discussed that day. The
intense expression on his face did not seem to match the
humor of the body language in the photo. I told him it would
make a great painting and he objected, thinking he looked
too fat in the photo. When I asked about the serious
expression he replied, "Girl, those were some damn big fish!"
I have always enjoyed looking through old photo albums and
found this process to be both cathartic and educational for
both myself and the family in the albums. Forgotten stories
are always revealed and revisited, and stir emotions often
concealed from even the closest family members. I love the
thought of breathing new life into these images with large
paintings, giving theses individuals import and attention.
Sharing memories and stories with friends and family
continues to inspire me as I build upon this body of work.
